Lab-Created Gemstones

MiaDonna uses some of the most scientifically advanced processes to create beautiful, precision-cut synthetic gemstones in a wide variety of colors and shapes. Our laboratory techniques produce real rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and alexandrites, with an identical physical, optical and chemical make-up to their natural gemstone equivalent.

Under laboratory conditions, temperatures are controlled and foreign materials found in the earth are eliminated from our starting chemicals, making our crystal growth more predictable, which in turn allows us to consistently produce the best qualities and colors - even better than those found in nature.

Our lab-created gemstones are conflict-free, superior to any alternative you’ll find on the market, and priced at only $358.00 per carat - approximately 3% the cost of a mined counterpart.

Growing Lab-Created Gemstones

We differentiate our gemstones through our growing process. Using a single growing method called Flux Fusion we're able to produce lab-created gemstones that are chemically, optically and physically identical to mined gemstones.

This growing method requires patience and significant investment. Crystal growth can take up to a year and equipment is very expensive. But the results, especially when it comes to emeralds, are well worth the time and investment.

The Flux Fusion process provides many advantages, the most important being an identical internal structure that gives each gemstone optimal brilliance and light return. Only an expert gemologists can distinguish a Flux grown lab-created gemstone from an earth-created counterpart.

The alternative Flame Fusion process uses a melting method to achieve a stone that carries the same look as a ruby and/or sapphire. It is the most commonly used method due to the low investment (approximately 1 cent per carat) and the quick turnaround (approximately 1 hour), however the lack of internal crystal structure means it will not carry the same brilliance as a natural ruby or sapphire, and will return a negative result when tested.

Rubies & Sapphires

Rubies and sapphires are gemstones that are both a form of corundum mineral. Red Corundum is called a Ruby, Pink-orange is called Padparadscha and all other colors we refer to as Sapphires. These are among the hardest and most durable gems, ideal for all types of jewelry.

Rubies can command the highest per-carat price of any colored stone. This makes ruby one of the most important gems in the colored stone market.

While rubies and sapphires are practically the same, they have completely different meanings:

  • Rubies are associated with intense passion, good luck, protection from misfortune, and personal inspiration. Ruby is the birthstone for July and the gem for the 15th and 40th anniversaries.
  • Sapphires are associated with blessings, divine knowledge, sincerity, and faithfulness. Sapphire is the birthstone for September and the gem of the 5th and 45th anniversaries.

Often described as “emerald by day, ruby by night,” alexandrite is the very rare color-change variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. Originally discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains in the 1830s, it’s now found in Sri Lanka, East Africa and Brazil, but this fine material is exceptionally rare and valuable.

Alexandrite is a birthstone for June, along with pearl and moonstone. Alexandrite is also the gem for the 55th wedding anniversary.
